Father Bill is on his way out. His last thoughts? For other priests! Making him a priest’s priest.

This is from a letter from Father Bill to Joe Maher and Pete Ferrara of Opus Bono Sacerdotii. Father Bill is dying. I’m taken that his last thoughts are for his fellow priests. Very kind, that. The last thoughts of a dying man are his very last will and testament. What a great way to go before the one and only priest, Christ Jesus.

Don’t ask for whom the bell tolls, for it tolls for thee.

“My Dear Joe, I’m writing to let you know that I can no longer talk to you or Pete on the phone. My condition has weakened. The staff here at the manor are wonderful. I’m blessed to be able to offer daily Mass when I am able and also to counsel patients as well as administer the Sacrament of the Sick and Penance when needed. However, I am now fighting aspirating pneumonia and I have also developed a problem with swallowing that is permanent. My foods need to be pureed. Also, my overall condition has worsened and I’ve lost a lot of weight. My breathing is more labored. I would appreciate your continued prayers as I prepare to leave this world soon. Please be assured that you are in my heart and my prayers as are all who share in this ministry. I ask only that you would continue your good works! With much love and gratitude for all you do for us priests, Fr. Bill”

And, here’s Father Clement’s second homily in his series on the priesthood:

Opus Bono launches their own YouTube channel

Fr. Byers

Wow! What an uplifting and moving homily on the state of the priesthood delivered in Our Lady of Priests Chapel located in our offices at Opus Bono Sacerdotii. Below is an excerpt from his inspired six-minute homily on the feast of St. John Bosco:

…as we look around at the state of the Catholic Church in the world today in particular the state of the Catholic priesthood. How dismal things have become for the Catholic priesthood. There are so few priests, parishes are closing, clustering, merging, the situation is very bleak. However, that which I just expressed is a very human and worldly way of looking at things. It is not the way that Our Lord, or his bride Holy Church, sees things. When we go back to the first centuries…”

You can view this inspirational homily at our YouTube channel. Father Clement, OSB, will be presenting a series of weekly homilies on the priesthood over the next few weeks during our Noontime Holy Mass. Please take a moment to visit our YouTube channel at http://www.youtube.com/user/opusbono On behalf of the thousands of Catholic priests who have contacted us, I thank you for your support and taking the time to visit our YouTube channel.

May Our Lady of Priests be your health and your protection.

Joe Maher, President of Opus Bono Sacerdotii, thanks Holy Souls Hermitage blog readers

Father Byers,

I just wanted to personally thank you and the followers of your http://holysoulshermitage.com blog. It is humbling for the priests and staff of Opus Bono Sacerdotii to see so many of your blog friends who are willing to pray for us and to sacrifice some of their material gifts to support the Catholic priests we care for who are in such dire circumstances. Your support and the support of your followers is so much needed and very much appreciated.

We will be praying for you and your blog followers!

Sincerely and with prayers for all of you to Our Lady of Priests,

Joe

From Pete at Opus Bono: Meet Father Charles

Not all dioceses are created equal. I remember as a deacon that, with $200 a month, I had to get a car, car insurance, pay for the gas and upkeep (in a country parish with long distances to travel), get my own groceries, etc., etc. No health insurance, no stipends (for the priests only), nothing. I relished 0.17 cent boxes of macaroni and powdered orange “cheese”, which fit my budget nicely. With that preface, read this:

Pete relayed this email to Opus Bono Sacerdotii:

“I’m 82 years old and have been a Catholic priest for a very long time. I am a priest in good standing and have been retired for some time now. Because of my infirmities (I am also blind in one eye), I am no longer able to offer Mass or administer the sacraments at the local parishes where I would receive a stipend to help supplement my Social Security of $670. I am paying rent on a small apartment. We are a small diocese and have no money to give priests like me who can’t work anymore at the parishes.

I have heard about your generosity to us priests. I know you have many more priests who are in greater need than me. Could you please help me with a monthly allowance to get by for food and electricity? I do have health insurance, but the co-pays for prescriptions and doctors visits are hard for me to manage. I am really afraid that I will have to stop taking my medicine.

I can pray my Holy Mass for you and your benefactors in my apartment, that is all I can offer!

Sincerely in His Name,

Father Charles”

The need is urgent and we are most grateful for any amount you could share with us for this priest who is in dire need.

God bless you,

Pete

A favor requested from you by Joe Maher of Opus Bono Sacerdotti as advised by Francis Cardinal George

Joe writes:

My heart breaks every time we encounter a crisis with a priest that could’ve been averted or at the very least, the outcome much more positive and fruitful if only the priest had known about us sooner.

This is the most mission critical aspect of Opus Bono’s success in caring for Catholic priests: being involved at the very beginning of a crisis in the life of a priest.

You can make a huge difference in helping us by spreading the word among your family, friends and priests. Most often the priests that contact us for assistance come from referrals by friends, family or brother priests who have heard about us from others.

Here’s what I’m asking you to consider doing to help Catholic priests:

  • Forward this email to all of your friends and family, and ask them to sign up for our email updates at www.opusbono.org/newsletter.html.
  • If you are on the social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn, please follow us and ask your friends to follow us as well:

  • Consider saying good things about our mission and our willingness to assist any priest no matter what the situation may be to all of your family, friends and contacts. We turn no priest away!

In 2004, Francis Cardinal George of Chicago advised us to “gain as much publicity as possible so that priests will know about you and can come to you for help”.

As a Partner in Mission with us, I’m calling out to you from the bottom of my heart to please consider spreading the word about Opus Bono and our excellent care for priests.

May Our Lady of Priests be your health and your protection.

Sincerely,

Joe

TRIPLE-PLAY FOR OPUS BONO SACERDOTII — ACTION ITEM

opus bono ranking

6,527,629 Global Traffic Rank w/40 Sites Linking In… Hmmm…

Not good enough. Not good enough at all.

Holy Souls Hermitage is doing about 2 1/2 times better than that on both scores. Still not much, but what it means is that perhaps 2/3 of those linking to HSH might also add a link to http://www.opusbono.org to give them three times the exposure and street cred, which helps them help priests.

It’s a tiny thing to do. Takes – what? – a minute? And in doing that you may well help them help priests in dire situations.

Pete wrote to me today to thank me, as he says he gets people over at Opus Bono donation page (here) who say that they came to know Opus Bono here on Holy Souls Hermitage, my tiny little blog.

So, no matter how small or big your blog, add a link, and tell people that you’ve added that link and why in a post. That’s what makes it all work.

Our Lord is very solicitous for the welfare of His priests. Don’t think that He doesn’t notice if you help out in whatever small or big way.

OPUS BONO

Fr. Byers

Please read the letter I just received:

“Dear Pete,

Another Christmas is history – my 19th in prison! Since my siblings and friends are all dead and I am broke, I’m definitely leaning toward skipping the parole date this year and taking the automatic 5 year setback. They won’t parole me anyways. My needs are cared for here and other guys are good to me. At 84+, how much longer can I have? THANK YOU very much for renewing my subscription for Magnificat – I can’t be without it!

Hope you can read my arthritic writing, but I’m up at 5:30 a.m. and it’s too early to type on my manual typewriter with other guys still sleeping. If people only knew how much you all do for us priests at Opus Bono! I can understand how funds are running low, after ALL the years that you have helped us. We are grateful!! May the New Year be one of much peace and good health for you, your loved ones and all who are engaged in this wonderful mission for us priests!

Gratefully in Christ,

Father Joe.”

Great news for our priests from Opus Bono Sacerdotii — This is A FIRST for our priests in ten full years

father thomas crowe and monsignor weiss sandy hook

Fr. Byers

This is the first time in our ten years of existence that we were able to provide for all the priests who asked for our financial assistance during the month of December!

I want to thank you from all the priests and staff of Opus Bono for your prayers and support.

[... snip!... Pete then mentions THIS...]

Finally, the priests of St. Rose of Lima parish in Newtown, CT where the shootings occurred desperately need our prayers. Tabitha, the sister to Father Luke Suarez at St. Rose of Lima asked that we forward to you the need for prayers for her brother Father Luke, Father Ignacio Ortigas, Monsignor Weiss who are tirelessly working over these past two weeks with the aftermath of the tragedy. Many of their parishioners were involved and lost their children.Sincerely in the Heart of the Infant,

Pete

[You heard the man. Add Father Luke, Father Ignacio Ortigas and Monsignor Weiss to your prayer list. Hail Mary...]

Sandy Hook Children During the Twelve Days of Christmas — A Video Of Grieving Love, Of Hope in Their Honor, by a Relative

This is Cheyanne’s Lullaby. A must see during these 12 days of Christmas.

This is a video just now made by Mary Rose, who created this expression of grief, of hope, of looking forward to a meeting in heaven.

This was made for her cousin, Sandy Hook Elementary School victim,  Allison Wyatt, and her nineteen little friends who died there.

Mary Rose is the twenty year old daughter of Joe Maher, who, as readers of HSH know, is the founder of the great organization, Opus Bono Sacerdotii. Joe sent me the video in these days after Christmas.

Know that there is an element of the lamentation of Rachel, who refused to be consoled, because they were no more, a passage cited about the wailing that went on in Bethlehem and environs when Herod had all the children two years old and under murdered, with our Lord just escaping into exile for the many years to come. His time would soon come. He also would know a most violent, tortured death, so as to bring us to life.

Yes, there is hope in this video. Much grief. But remember, grief comes from love.

I am reminded of these posts for your review:

(1) The beatitude about the blessedness of grieving, of knowing the love in the midst of grieving.

(2) The Grief Woman - a chapter in a book I’m writing about the women in the Gospels. This one is a widow who is grieving for her only son.

Please use the sharing buttons. Pass it on. This is the request of the relatives. A message of hope in the midst of love that grieves is importnat to share. Thanks. We help each other in this way.

Kids who support priests falsely accused of abuse and all those in need by forgoing Christmas presents — Out of the mouths of babes! — Bringing The Judas Crisis full circle

kids opus bono sacerdotii

I first received this picture in an email quite a while back from the famous “Liz”, whom I consider to be a good friend.

After some weeks, the picture showed up as WDTPRS in regard to the Z-SWAG which you see on the back of the car: “God Bless Our Priests!”

But now, the rest of the story via Opus Bono Sacerdotii. This is just great!

Fr. Byers

I had to share with you a powerful email that was sent to our president, Joe Maher, from a mother of ten whose children are voluntarily giving up some of their Christmas presents in order to support the priests who are standing in line waiting for our financial assistance this Christmas. Please read below and see the picture!

It touched all of the priests and staff here at Opus Bono deeply and motivated us to think ever more serious about the work that God has called us to do in caring for His priests.

“These are the five youngest of our ten kids. Aren’t they cute? Okay, I’m a biased mother!”  (Mary Rose is the one in pink holding the infant)

“Joe,

My kids love priests.

We live near a seminary and get to meet and know lots of priests, quite a lot. It’s a huge blessing.

Plus the kids know all about Father G. [This is our common friend, Father Gordon J. MacRae (about)] (who is now a good friend) and the injustice in his case. They’ve written to him. (It’s easy to explain to kids. They “get it” more than most adults. All I had to do was point out how it feels when they are punished and they are not guilty. Of course they don’t know all of the details, but they understand injustice.)

So anyway, at dinner time we discussed giving up presents to support your work for priests and they were totally in support of my idea. So, if I buy them fewer gadgets etc. and give that savings to priests they are great with that. We even talked about how some of these kids (our kids) are from third world countries. Mary Rose, 10, remembers the unbelievable poverty in Ethiopia. We have more than enough in this country.

So, we can make tiny sacrifices for these priests who are suffering so painfully for love of Holy Mother Church, well it’s the least we can do. As my friend Mother Lucy[! Go Mother Lucy !!!] says they are the martyrs of our time.

God has blessed us beyond measure and it’s the least we can do to share a little.

God bless you and your fine organization!

I hope and pray you get lots of money for these priests this Christmas!

Thanks for all you do.

Liz”

Fr. Byers

Would you please consider joining Liz’s kids and make a special donation to enable us to support the priests who are awaiting our support this Christmas?

The need has never been more urgent!

Please click on the link below to make your special Christmas donation:

It is much needed and on behalf of all the priests and staff of Opus Bono, I thank you!

Pete

* * *

On behalf of all priests, from those just ordained all the way to Pope Benedict XVI, I thank you dear readers for anything you can do for these priests. I don’t see who clicks on the donate link just above, but I do see that there are some of you kind souls who click on that link when I put up these posts on behalf of Opus Bono Sacerdotii.

May the Lord, the Priest of Priests and the Prince of the Most Profound Peace, reward you abundantly, and continue to bless you according to the perfect intercession of the Immaculate Conception.

Either we don’t support our priests, or… WE DO! A seven-fold Yikes!

flood rv from mysanantonio googled image

Fr. Byers

This morning a letter was waiting on our president, Joe Maher’s desk. Unfortunately, Father Paul will have to wait (I HATE having to say that to a Catholic priest!).

We don’t have the funds available to help him immediately:

“Good morning Mr. Maher,

Thank you for your good wishes for Thanksgiving. I started the day by going to the local church to thank the Good Lord for His countless blessings at the early Mass. Then returned “home” Continue reading

HEY! What about us priests at Thanksgiving, you know, thanksgiving to God? Huh? What about it? (I agree!) Make today’s Black Friday a Black and White Friday!

Fr. Byers

The many, many priests that we serve will be remembering you in a special way at their Holy Masses this Thursday.

On behalf of the thousands of Catholic priests who have contacted us for help over the past ten years, we wish you a Happy Thanksgiving!

I ask you to please consider making a special Thanksgiving donation for those priests who are urgently waiting in line for much needed financial support from us. Our fund can only support so many, but with your help, we can support so many more priests this Thanksgiving!

Many of these suffering priests will be alone for Thanksgiving. Hearing of your support will be such an encouragement to them, and lift their spirits from the loneliness they may be feeling on Thanksgiving Day.

Please click below to make your special Thanksgiving gift for a suffering priest:

http://www.opusbono.org/donate.html

Thank you again and may Our Lady of Priests be your health and your protection this Thanksgiving.

Pete

HSH adds this… From The Deacon’s Bench:

The history books will tell you that the first Thanksgiving was celebrated by the pilgrims in 1621. Not true.

An interesting bit of trivia is that the first American Thanksgiving was actually celebrated on September 8, 1565 in St. Augustine, Florida. The Native Americans and Spanish settlers held a feast and the Holy Mass was offered.

A second similar “Thanksgiving” celebration occurred on American soil on April 30, 1598 in Texas when Don Juan de Oñate declared a day of Thanksgiving to be commemorated by the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

The Catholic origins of Thanksgiving don’t stop there. Squanto, the beloved hero of Thanksgiving, was the Native American man who mediated between the Puritan Pilgrims and the Native Americans. Squanto had been enslaved by the English but he was freed by Spanish Franciscans. Squanto thus received baptism and became a Catholic. So it was a baptized Catholic Native American who orchestrated what became known as Thanksgiving.

And, of course, let’s not forget (as the essay points out) that the word “Eucharist” means “Thanksgiving.”

BLACK AND WHITE

Now, just sayin’… I have about $100.00 bucks in the checking account right now, so I’m O.K. for now. But these guys are not. Opus Bono is stretched way beyond its capacities. They do great work, working themselves, really, to death, day in and day out, for our priests who have been marginalized unjustly or otherwise, but also unjustly. In thanksgiving, please consider donating to Opus Bono Sacerdotii as part of your Thanksgiving festivities. MAKE BLACK FRIDAY INTO BLACK AND WHITE FRIDAY (especially since that Friday starts – what? – today?)

Opus Bono Sacerdotii — Habitat for Humanity (for priests!)

From Opus Bono:

“Sometimes it feels a little bit like we’re Habitat for Humanity for priests.” Opus Bono’s president Joe Maher said. “People don’t realize the extent to which Catholic priests are alone and hurting and they don’t all have the ability to take care of the poor homes they are living in. Winter can be very cruel and life-threatening to a sick or elderly priest in a broken down ‘shack’. We have to make sure they’re warm and safe, and that sometimes means a lot of back-breaking physical labor for our staff. We’ll do whatever we have to do for a Catholic priest.”

We literally have dozens of Catholic priests in dire need waiting in line for our support. The need is so urgent right now. Please, please consider making a donation now to help these poor suffering priests at the link below:

http://www.opusbono.org/donate.html

On behalf of the thousands of priests that have contacted us for help, I thank you!

May Our Lady of Priests be your health and your protection…

Pete

You may ask, “But who are these priests? Why don’t their bishops take care of them?”

Some priests simply did not prepare for retirement, but gave alms all the way through life, taking care of this or that seminarian’s expenses, etc. But then they have nothing. It used to be that a priest would retire in a rectory, but now they are shipped off to it-doesn’t-matter-land. Some have no destination, and are destitute. Times change, and they did not expect such cold hard-heartedness on the part of their fellow bishops and priests. But this can happen more frequently than you might expect.

Then there are the priests who have been accused of abuse. As we know, even as much as 50% of those accusations were false. I would put the number even higher, including a high percentage of the myriad who have done a plea deal in order to get out of prison in months instead of decades or life in prison, while all the time they are innocent. This happens all the time.

As it is, in the rather ferocious The Judas Crisis Series widget on the sidebar of the blog (http://holysoulshermitage.com) one reads of The National Catholic Risk Retention Group (TNCRRG), which boasts a membership of a great number of our bishops and archbishops and religious superiors. TNCRRG holds all priests to be be guilty from the day of their ordinations. They are just looking for an excuse to pay a settlement. There need not be any accusations, nor even an accuser if the abuse attorney is clever enough to get money with no clients.

Anyway, some of those priests are put on offender lists, and, though out of prison, can get no job. They live absolutely marginalized. There is hardly a priest or bishop anywhere at any time who will help them out, ever.

Leave it to Opus Bono Sacerdotii to help them out.

I myself have gone to Habitat for Humanity to build the hermitage. I’ve very often wondered what those priests do who are hermits not by choice, but because of other circumstances, those who are in bad health, those who are elderly. Could they throw about the windows and doors and roofing like I did? Could they lightly toss logs weighing hundreds of pounds about like I’ve done? No, probably not. Even I couldn’t. I got a hernia, and then an operation, thankfully before Obamacare kicked in.

Anyway, there are very, very many priests who are helped by Opus Bono. Could you help Opus Bono carry out their apostolate?

An email from Opus Bono Sacerdotii — Yikes!

Today, our president Joe Maher, received two urgent pleas for immediate assistance from Fr. James and from Fr. Francis. Fr. Francis just returned home after a three week emergency stay in the hospital. His cupboards are bare and he is requesting $450 for food and medicine. Fr. James needs $500 for car repairs in order to return to work on Tuesday. Both of these men were directed to Opus Bono by their brother priests who have helped them as much as they can financially.

They have no one else to turn to, but to us!

I ask you out of the kindness of your heart and your great love for the Catholic priesthood to please make a donation so that we can assist these men. As always, I am only writing to you now because our hearts are broken that we do not have the funds available in our account at this time to help them. With over 1,000 priests needing our assistance on a regular basis, it is impossible to give Fr. James and Fr. Francis what they need to survive without your financial support.

Please, please consider making a contribution on-line today at our website: http://www.opusbono.org/donate.html

Or by mail at Opus Bono Sacerdotii, P.O. Box 663, Oxford, MI 48371. Making a donation on-line will get to Fr. James and Fr. Francis quicker.

No amount is too big or too small!

We appreciate your prayers and for your financial sacrifice to love and care for Catholic priests. I thank you in advance for your support.

Gratefully,

Pete

Pete Ferrara

/// HSH Comment:

  • One would wrongly think that all priests thrown out of the priesthood or out of active ministry for whatever reason are all guilty as hell. One would be wrong about 50% of the time. Those are the stats.
  • One would wrongly think that, whatever the case, surely their (arch)dioceses will support them in some way. One would be wrong most of the time on that. They are just thrown on the trash heap (even when known to be totally innocent). It just looks better if they are slowly executed in this way, right?
  • One would wrongly think that HSH has backed away from advocating for priests going through the purgatory of this life or the next. It’s just that yours truly has had many distractions of late. But advocating for priests has not slipped out of my heart and soul and mind in the least. On the contrary. You’ll be seeing a few more posts coming up soon.

Meanwhile, please, please, please consider clicking on the link above and clicking through to make a donation, however big, however tiny. Every single dollar helps. http://www.opusbono.org/donate.html

I remember one priest, not accused of anything, just retired, a saintly old man, who, though living in the Pennsylvania mountains in a trailer, donated what he had to those less fortunate than he. And then he was scolded by the bishop who paid him a visit, scolded because the toilet had broken. How, you ask? Because it was so cold inside the trailer that the toilet bowl shattered because of the ice. Just a thought. Sometimes we can be in need because we’ve been too generous. I wonder, in fact, about those 1000 priests helped by Opus Bono Sacerdotii, just how many fit that description. I bet many more than many are willing even to think about. Because it’s shameful how we throw away priests, accused or not, innocent or not.
