Unfortunately – no. Not at my Parish.

  2. pelerin

Yes – in my parish all statues were veiled.

Rather striking veil that covered both the crucifix and the tabernacle, gathered between the two so as to give the impression of a chalice shape. Also there were small electric lamps behind the big candlesticks giving indirect light reflected off the brass. Very solemn effect.

Unfortunately they apparently forgot to veil the statutes on the side altars or else ran out of time or fabric.

    Same here Pelerin.

  5. At my parish? Of course not. *sigh*

  6. Rebecca Alexis

The statues in my parish are all wonderfully veiled in purple as well.

None of the churches where I live (Baton Rouge, LA) do this but I am visiting New Orleans where I never miss going to Mass at St. Patrick’s for my traditional Catholicism fix. How wonderful to know that the tradition survives there!

At the Cathedral here in B’ham Ala. we had this with one exception the statue of St. Joseph was not covered since his Solemnity is this Tuesday and we will be having a St. Joseph’s Altar there. It will be covered after that.

  9. The statues were not veiled at St-Irénée. Nor the crucifix.

The statues at the side altar are down for cleaning and repainting, but the others were not covered. Strange, this has been done in previous years.

Gosh! It never occurred to me to cover a baldacchino!
Yes…St. Agnes has everything covered in purple…except the baldacchino (or whatever that huge gold thing over the altar is with the HS in it).

  12. ohwisdom: It’s not a baldacchino yet! The painting isn’t done, and is still hanging in the house of the great artist!

No. But as we are at a Byzantine parish, that is not surprising. As far as I know, the tradition of veiling images in Lent is not done by the Eastern Catholics. Which leaves us wondering whether we ought to veil the statues at our house, but not the ikons, leave both uncovered, or veil both.

  14. Article at EWTN on the subject

The writer gets some information wrong and humbly corrects himself in an update.

  15. Denise, yes, I saw that. Very cool.

I’m currently visiting in the Phoenix area of Arizona and there is barely a statue present, no coverings on pictures or crucifix in this parish. I’m missing my New England parish. Perhaps I can gently and politely comment this coming Palm Sunday.
