That gull looks rather pleased with himself; he seems to be going about his business like everything is OK. Does this mean the weather has moderated in the Eternal City?

This reminds me of the scene in the Lord of the Rings, when the gates of Minas Tirith were destroyed and the Witch King entered the city in victory:

And in that very moment, away behind in some courtyard of the city, a cock crowed. Shrill and clear he crowed, recking nothing of war nor of wizardry, welcoming only the morning that in the sky far above the shadows of death was coming with the dawn.

As we fret over petty political concerns and elections, even to such a sublime office as that of the Vicar of Christ, this gull has no care for who will be the next Pope, or how long we will anxiously wait for him. Nature gives us a glimpse of the eternal. We could have a bad Pope or a good Pope, even a so-so Pope, but the Church Militant will continue marching towards the End with the Church Suffering, and the Church Triumphant will “reck nothing” of our small opinions of the next man to set in Peter’s Chair.

Even so, Lord, grant us not the Pope we deserve, but deign to comfort us who love your Church so much with a wise and holy Father, remembering the miraculous favors you have granted time and again for much less serious petitions!

  4. I love that, Choirmaster.

  7. Wish the gull had a branch in his mouth.

  8. Uganda: You mean, for Cardinal Turkson, of Justice and Peace?
