Destination of the first Marian pilgrimage of Pope Francis

saint mary major googled image

There are number of places possible, but the Basilica of Saint Mary Major has to be the one. Pictured is the chapel of our Lady in the Basilica. The painting, tradition has it, is by Saint Luke the Evangelist.

I love this mention of our Lady. Right away. She’s important to him.

Hi Fr George, I awoke and checked my email a bit after 5am here in Oz and saw your post about the bird on the chimney – surely a signal in itself! Then I checked the news sites and saw the white smoke and heard the bells – tears of joy! Then the wait, watching the extraordinary crowd in St Peters Square….Then the announcement followed eventually by the first glimpse of the unknown, Pope Francis. His first prayer for Benedict – I’m reassured; his references to Our Lady – I’m totally persuaded!

BTW are you going to remove the “We will not be consoled” banner now? [[[ YES! ]]]

  2. She knew before us and must be rejoicing with Jesus.

A Pope with devotion to the Blessed Mother is always a good sign. May he rule according to God’s will and not ours (or his).

I’ve seen some really distressing and awful comments about Pope Francis since his election a few hours ago. Rash judgment all over the place. Makes me want to run and prostrate myself in front of the Blessed Sacrament and say “Thy will be done” until I pass out. We have to remember that God gives the grace for the office we hold. He won’t abandon Francis and He won’t abandon His Church. Nuff said.

  4. Barbara: Satan is the accussor, and will have much to say about all of us before the throne of God, won’t he? Not everything everyone says is true. The papacy has many enemies.

The same thing happened to Pope Benedict. The naysayers seem to be the first and the noisiest.
Can it possibly be…just possibly…”Francis, rebuild my Church”??
That is also going around :-)

  6. Rorate is a blog I tend to read daily. I had been following it closely the last couple days to get news about the conclave, and naturally I logged-on this afternoon to see what was to be said about our Holy Father Pope Francis. I unfortunately had to make a quick call home to forbid my wife and children from reading that particular blog this afternoon. I tend to stay away from the comment boxes… and today I wish I had.

I do not defend that blog or many of those comments left. I would like to say that the ‘bitterness’ often exhibited is akin to the way someone acts when they have been abused by a parent… like their father. This is not an attempt to say that ‘bad’ actions are ‘good’ … but to give a glimpse on what some of the so ‘rad-tads’ are reacting to… past abuse or neglect by someone who should have been a spiritual father. (I am not speaking of sexual abuse) Again… it is their choice to act that way… I am not saying they are not culpable for their own actions. There are many who are able to grow from being given a cross instead of letting it crush them.

  7. Timothy: Whatever. What I mean by that is when a new Pope is elected, it is a whole new ball game. I’ll write a post on that.
