In the google maps picture below, the red circle on the upper right is that of the papal apartments on the terzo piano. The lower left indicates the Holy Office, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, where he spent a good part of his life. On the lower left, almost off the screen, is where the Lourdes grotto is. On the upper left is the monastery which is his new hermitage. Vatican Radio still has much of their operations in the building immediately to the left of that.

Accompany me, Father George David Byers, S.S.L., S.T.D., as I begin life as a Catholic Priest-Hermit by choice. Holy Souls Hermitage is dedicated to the sanctification of my fellow priests, bishops, deacons & seminarians going through the purgatory of this life or the next. Prayer and sacrifice go up, of course, for both Benedict XVI and the next Successor of Saint Peter.

Quite possibly we have here the full spectrum of hermitages between the Holy Father’s and Holy Souls. Hermitages, both – but one is just a *smidge* more austere than the other….
Lare Lee: And only Holy Souls Hermitage will have an original painting of the Holy Spirit!!!
Hah! Small consolation, that.
More to the point – there is no Laudie dog, nor chickens – begging the question – to what will he feed the spiders?
