My understand is that, when the Dems were drafting their platform, they purposely excluded any mention of Jerusalem in regard to Israel and they [ex]cluded any mention of God.
Talk about inept. Talk about leaving a bad impression.

I now understand that Pres. Obama – get this – ordered his staff to have the platform language changed to include God and affirm Jerusalem as the proper capital of Israel. A campaign source confirmed this.
That means that Obama gets all the credit without believing any of it. His heroic intervention to drag the platform back from the fringe to the center, will help him with the Jewish vote AND the Catholic left. Impact will be felt in Ohio and Florida.
I suspect the whole thing was a setup. They did this ON PURPOSE so that Obama could intervene.
I think Father Z got it dead right. The Jewish vote is largely Democratic, except for the Orthodox. The non-Orthodox were terribly humiliated, but then saved face with Obama’s intervention. But did they? I think that they should think again. If Father Z is correct, that means that the cynicism of the DNC and Obama is such that what happens to Israel and to believers just doesn’t matter. For such things can be twisted for the sake of a vote. And if they can, such decisions can reversed again. So why is the Jewish vote still behind Obama and the Democratic party? Why would anyone vote for someone who can do such things?

I absolutely respect Fr. Z, especially on matters of liturgy and pastoral practice, but I think he’s wrong here.
My opinion is that, as has often happened in the democratic party since the 1970s, the very radical left got hold of the Platform committee. After making sure that the 30% of Democrats who are pro-life got complete cut out of any mention in the platform, they pushed through their anti-Christian/anti-Semitic agenda for the platform. This was before the convention even started.
The convention started and Drudge, Fox News and Beck were delighted to point out that the Democrats had purged God from their Platform and thrown Israel under the bus.
Obama’s people looked at the polls and saw that they were taking a bath on this. So in a move to fix it they sent word out that a floor vote would be taken to amend the platform. With typical ineptitude they figured the delegates would rubber stamp whatever they put out. Somebody forgot to tell all of the little atheists and Palestinian supporters on the floor and they made a fuss. This left Obama’s errand boy with a problem. He call two voice votes and the motion failed. So he did what any liberal would do. He called another vote, ignored the result, and claimed the amendment passed by 2/3rds.
No one who has seem this should think it either makes the Democrats look good or that they could possibly have planned this. It makes Obama look weak. It makes the party look corrupt. It makes the party leaders look politically incompetent. If some PAC doesn’t have a commercial out using it by next week they need to hire some new strategists.
