E.D. sent this in with a note:
“Someone posted this awesome statue on facebook. It is said to be in Maryland. I thought, this has Fr George written all over it.”
I would like all readers to note just how intelligent donkeys are! What good creatures of our Heavenly Father. They were right there, were they not, to bring Mary and Joseph to Bethelem, then to Egypt, then all the way back to Nazareth. And… and…… our Lord rode into Jerusalem, unto His death, on a donkey.

Accompany me, Father George David Byers, S.S.L., S.T.D., as I begin life as a Catholic Priest-Hermit by choice. Holy Souls Hermitage is dedicated to the sanctification of my fellow priests, bishops, deacons & seminarians going through the purgatory of this life or the next. Prayer and sacrifice go up, of course, for both Benedict XVI and the next Successor of Saint Peter.

Truly instructive! I’d love to know where in MD, the artist, etc.
I almost always use the story of St. Anthony and the Donkey in my first communion homily. I tell the children (and thus their parents) that even a donkey knows that what we receive in Holy Communion in not just bread! Even a donkey knows that even though it looks like bread, it is really and truly Jesus. The kids love it…the parents…well, they mostly are ashamed.
This is a marvelous statue! I also wondered where in Md it is – so I looked it up and here’s what I found.
“”This statue of St. Anthony of Padua and the donkey bowing to the Eucharist is located at the Shrine of St. Anthony, in Ellicott City, Maryland. It is between the Shrine’s outdoor altar and the front of the shrine building.
The Shrine of St. Anthony is a ministry of the Conventual Franciscan Friars. Mass is offered daily at noon. This peaceful, holy ground is welcoming to all. It is a wonderful pilgrimage destination and one of my favorite places to rest and reflect. Additional details about the Shrine are located after the brief biography of St. Anthony of Padua and the story of the donkey and the Eucharist .”" The location is: Shrine of St. Anthony, 12290 Folly Quarter Rd. Ellicott City, MD 21042

Well done joisygoil! Definitely on my list of destinations.
Thank you joiseygoil for the information on this wonderful statue!
WOW!
really cool photo, now on my desktop
Yes thanks to joisygoil for the link where I was able to see the photo of this unusual statue. (For some unknown reason the photos on Fr George’s blog do not show up on my computer)
It was most apt for me today as my parish has the 40 Hours Exposition today and tomorrow – apparently it is 40 YEARS since the last one in our Deanery. Brick by brick …..
You are all very welcome. If any of you manage to go see the statue, please say a little prayer for me.
Father Byers, in addition to being faithful companions and pack animals, did you know that livestock ranchers/shepherds also raise donkeys alongside them as guardians/protectors of the herd?
Cathy L.: People have been telling me that, and even offered to get me a donkey. However, the forest offers no pasture!
