This is a wonderful initiative of the New Evangelization. Vocations, anyone!

The Oratory of Saint Philip Neri has always been on the cutting edge of evangelization. They want people in heaven!

I know one of the founding members. This is really very good for the Catholic Church in the U.S.A.

  1. Catherine D.

Father George, did Vatican II truly intend for the priest to face the congregation when they celebrated the Mass. It appears that the priests are facing the altar in this article. I am confused what it all means.

  2. The wierdly written rubics in the Institution of the Mass as promulgated in 1969/1970, 1975, etc, which were also mistranslated and misinterpreted, did somehow tolerate facing the people by way of exception. The rubrics during Mass assume that the priest is facing the altar.

The immemorial practice of the priest facing the Sacrifice along with the people (he is a priest for them and a Christian with them) is coming back. This is good.

It is way to easy for a priest to show-boat his way through Mass if he facing the people. Even most priests are tempted and even fall into showboating a bit, if not, for some, entirely. It is just as easy for the people to put him on a pedestal if he is facing them. They can also gladly do this, despite all scandals, etc., because, if he sins, then they also have permission, if you will, to sin.

Offering Mass with everyone looking to the Sacrifice, ad orientem as it is called, cuts all this temptation out immediately. It is Christ Jesus who is all of a sudden more important.

  3. They are offering the Extraordinary Form of the Mass! Note that the Novus Ordo, the New Order of Mass, is also assumed to be offered in this fashion.
