UPDATE: Lots of suggestions coming in. Thanks for that. There’s one I need advice about. Very inexpensive. A super hot — Kodiac Bear grade — pepper spray. I’m thinking that bears are basically blind anyway. Their anger and momentum would have them kill you before they would decide that they don’t like the pepper spray. Wouldn’t it be like a tooting a vuvuzela while standing on the highway, just feet away, seconds away, from being run over by a tractor-trailor? Ineffective? Dunno. There certainly do seem to be many brands of super-hot pepper spray…
