Saint Michael, possession, suicide and friends of Holy Souls Hermitage

A great friend of very many years asked her extended family to pray for me. A devout young lad of the family, who helps take care of his grandmother, a normal, happy go lucky boy, who was laughing with the family at dinner, totally peaceful and calm and happy, tried to kill himself later, just the other night, with horrifically deadly poison. Miraculously, he survived with a bout of vomiting and care for hours. When asked why he had done this, it was, instead, a demonic voice which answered, with all the usual arrogant rubbish about who is to be in charge. When asked later about this, the young boy was as surprised as everyone, totally bewildered, and had no idea how all this had come about. Indeed, he was shocked, shaking from fear at having come so close to death, and the father of death. Jesus wins out, but, just to say this again:

Some days ago I made a rather urgent request for you prayers, asking you all to invoke Saint Michael, asking that you pray the Saint Michael prayer once for my intentions and then once for you and yours. Many of you have also had Masses offered for me. Thank you.

I would like to repeat this request, asking that after you pray the Saint Michael Prayer for my intentions, when you then also pray this prayer for you and yours, you also include in this latter prayer those who are doing as you are in praying this Saint Michael Prayer. Thanks! — And please, if you would, say an extra Hail Mary for the young boy. Thanks, on his behalf.

“The more I pray for your intentions the more I feel another power oppressing me… God have mercy on me!”

Some days ago I made a rather urgent request for you prayers, asking you all to invoke Saint Michael, asking that you pray the Saint Michael prayer once for my intentions and then once for you and yours. Many of you have also had Masses offered for me. Thank you.

Today I would like to repeat this request, asking that after you pray the Saint Michael Prayer for my intentions, when you then also pray this prayer for you and yours, you also include in this latter prayer those who are doing as you are in praying this Saint Michael Prayer.

This is a battle, and Satan is rather upset. We need to stick together. That statement – “The more I pray for your intentions the more I feel another power opressing me… God have mercy on me” — was made by one of best pray-ers I know. We need to remember each other in prayer as well. Thanks!

Just so dead. The first of the season. Hah! KILL IT WITH FIRE!

A Down Under reader sent this in:

This refers to my sometimes used method of killing yellowjackets, which have now returned to Holy Souls Mountain. We take no prisoners here. Behold, the first to taste death!…

Perhaps you think I’m too triumphalistic over the death of this yellowjacket queen. Not at all. This is an effort to save the life of the neighbor, who’s deadly allergic to even one sting. The problem is pretty bad here on Holy Souls Mountain. Here’s an excerpt about these critters from the faunae page, written last year:

After rushing my neighbor — on whose property the hermitage lies — down Holy Souls Mountain, and after his life was saved by the EMTs, since he had been stung, he now admits, perhaps 50 times, and he’s deadly alergic to them, I then waited just a bit more till nightfall to burn the culprits, these varmints, to death. Here’s the entrance to their underground nest burning with orange and blue flames:

And here’s a couple of feet away from that entrance, where the flames sprang up spontaneously, what with the gasoline I poured into their entrance having oozed through their nest and into the surrounding dirt:

And here’s the result I dug up the next day, three “pancakes” worth of these varmints. This is how they construct their nests below ground:

I like all of God’s critters, but I’ve declared war on yellowjackets, and have killed 82 of the queens so far (Only fertilized queens survive the winter). My neighbor, on whose property I live, has killed 33 so far this Spring (making 115 altogether). Multiply that by 20,000 yellowjackets per queen, and you get a potential 2,300,000 yellowjackets on the property — and that’s only talking about the ones we did get to kill. There must be very many more! There are certainly many flying around all over, in the open, in the woods…

My weapon of choice for the fertilized queens in the Spring is an old kitchen broom, necessarily the kind with the soft plastic bristles.

I bat them out of the air in the, um, space where I’m living before the hermitage is completed. The queens are a bit dopey. They fly against a window (whereas otherwise they would not). They stay there while you gently put the bristles over them. They can’t move. I then take a small plastic chainsaw oil jug and crush them through the bristles. This is extremely quick and, as far as I can tell, safe!

No more ignored by everyone fish-tank tabernacle in the Rosary Basilica of Lourdes!

A dear reader sent in this the link to the Lourdes youtube site. Isn’t it interesting that the more hum-drum exposition of the Blessed Sacrament one has, in an effort to bring Jesus to “the people”, the more the Blessed Sacrament is ignored? That’s what happened for umpteen years in Lourdes with the fishtank looking box embedded in the free-standing altar, with a ciborium of consecrated Hosts within it’s window pane clear glass walls. Outside of my fellow chaplains at the time, I don’t know if anyone was really aware that the glass box wasn’t just a museum showcase. But now, that’s all gone!

One day, the high altar will go back. I don’t know where they are going to put the tabernacle for now… Anyone?

More on the recovered memories of sexual abuse

I still have to send out the books of David F. Pierre, Jr., to those who requested them. I got a heap more in the other day from a very dear reader. Patience! I’ve had many distractions of late. The other day, I posted  a note on suicide to the recovered-memories-of-abuse crowd. Read the excellent comments of that post as well. David F. Pierre, Jr., called my attention to his own article on repressed memory. He includes some bibliography to read on this matter. Is it all so absolute as he says? I’m no expert. Maybe, maybe not. What I do know is that this has to thrashed out a bit more, for there are many at risk of being hurt because of what seems to be a wildly applied theory. I did receive some heart-wrenching stories upon that previous post. I write about this because there is so much hurt, and that hurt needs to stop. Piling on more hurt would be unconscionable.

“Repressed Memory” – Debunked

Many individuals have come forward publicly to claim that a priest molested them years earlier (and often decades earlier) after asserting that they “repressed” the memory of the abuse having occurred.

Unfortunately, the media has been woefully uncritical when reporting cases in which an individual invokes “repressed memory” when claiming abuse by a priest from decades earlier.

Dr. Richard J. McNally is the Professor and Director of Clinical Training in the Department of Psychology at Harvard University. As one of the world’s leading experts in the field of memory, he has 250 publications to his credit, including the heralded 2003 book, Remembering Trauma.

In a 2005 letter to the California Supreme Court, which was handling a case in which “repressed memory” was debated, Dr. McNally asserted:

“The notion that traumatic events can be repressed and later recovered is the most pernicious bit of folklore ever to infect psychology and psychiatry. It has provided the theoretical basis for ‘recovered memory therapy’ — the worst catastrophe to befall the mental health field since the lobotomy era.”

Many other prominent experts agree. “Repressed memory” is simply bogus.

Dr. Grant Devilly, from the Psychological Health research unit at Griffith University, agrees with Dr. McNally. Devilly says that memories of terrifying experiences work in the opposite manner of repressed memory theory. People rather wish they could forget their traumatic experiences.

“It’s the opposite. They wish they couldn’t think about it,” says Devilly.

Then there is Dr. James McGaugh from the University of California, Irvine. His expertise in the area of memory was once profiled on CBS’ 60 Minutes program. Regarding the issue of “repressed memory,” Dr. McGaugh said in a 2010 book,

“I do not believe there’s such a thing as repressed memory. I haven’t seen a single instance in which a memory was completely repressed and popped up again.

I go on science, not fads. And there’s absolutely no proof that it can happen. Zero. None. Niente. Nada. All my research says that strong emotional experiences leave emotionally strong memories. Being sexually molested would certainly qualify.”

In addition:

  • “Recovered-memory therapy will come to be recognized as the quackery of the 20th century.” – Dr. Richard Ofshe, a social psychologist at the University of California, Berkeley (Leon Jaroff and Jeanne McDowell, “Repressed-Memory Therapy: Lies of the Mind,” Time, November 29, 1993);
  • “If penis envy made us look dumb, this will make us look totally gullible.” – Dr. Paul McHugh, chairman of the psychiatry department at Johns Hopkins University(Leon Jaroff and Jeanne McDowell, “Repressed-Memory Therapy: Lies of the Mind,” Time, November 29, 1993);
  • “You can’t be raped for 10 years and not remember it. Yet, according to the repression aficionados, anything’s possible.” – Dr. Elizabeth Loftus, professor of psychology at the University of California Irvine (Sasha Abramsky, “Memory and Manipulation: The trials of Elizabeth Loftus, defender of the wrongly accused,” LA Weekly, August 19, 2004).

Indeed, this is an issue that must be approached with caution and sensitivity. Not all clergy abuse victims invoke “repressed memory.” The memory of actual awful abuse is all too real and devastating.

“Repressed memory” should not be confused with instances in which an abused individual minimizes the awful harm that was done and comes to the harsh realization later in life of having been abused. Indeed, as Harvard’s Dr. McNally has explained, many victims only come to the understanding of the damage done to them years later after reassessing their hideous experiences. There can be intense suffering when victims reexamine their childhood abuse later in life.

“Seeing the event through the eyes of adult, they realize what has happened to them and now they experience the emotional turmoil of trauma,” says Dr. McNally. The trauma is equivalent to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Fortunately, therapy under the direction of a competent psychologist has been shown to be very helpful to victims of PTSD.

“Things have changed, happily. We now have treatments that work,” adds Dr. McNally.

One final note: It is important to know that in the rare moments that “repressed memory” is challenged in the media, victim advocates will vehemently and vocally complain to writers and editors who dare to challenge the bogus theory. Such attackers will falsely claim that there is a legitimate “other side” to this issue. There isn’t. The public should be very aware of this.

To repeat the words of Dr. McNally, “repressed memory therapy” is indeed “the worst catastrophe to befall the mental health field since the lobotomy era.”

Deadly serious request to Holy Souls Hermitage readers

Might I request that, in your charity, you pray this Saint Michael prayer for my intention and then for you and yours? Thanks in advance! From time to time one sees things a bit more clearly even though things might stare one in the face throughout life. This is one of those times of sudden clarity for me. The Church Militant is always the same, always held with tenderness close to the Sacred Heart which took on the world, and Satan, and conquered. Yet, we are still weak. The great Elijah comes to mind, you know, when he saw things a bit more clearly, then fled to Sinai, where the Lord straight away sent him back into the fray. I can identify with the seeing things more clearly and the desire to flee bit! But one cannot run from the will of the Lord. One can, however, become ever more the simple child before the Lord, trusting in Him no matter what. In fact, that’s why Saint Michael can conquer so easily. So simple (in the good sense), so clear of spirit, that he is the one Michael (Mi-cha-el) “Who is like unto God.” Yep, that’s what I need, to have a bit more trust, a bit more agility of spirit. Saint Michael helps exactly with this. This is how we, carried by our Lord into the battle, conquer. Anyway, my intention for this is much bigger than just me.

A note on suicide to the recovered-memories-of-abuse crowd

Here’s an abstract of a study done on Australian youngsters (2001) just before the abuse publicity in the United States (2002), and so presumably on those who had not been subject to recovered memories of abuse as had become the fashion soon afterward by way of some psychologists/psychiatrists in the U.S.A. (and then Australia and elsewhere). I’ll make a comment after this short abstract of the article:

Abstract

OBJECTIVE:

To determine the suicide rate and prevalence of suicide attempts and suicidal ideation in 183 young people who had experienced child sexual abuse and to examine variables related to the abuse, which may correlate with suicide attempts or suicidal ideation.

METHODS:

Adolescents and young adults who had experienced child sexual abuse and individuals from a nonabused comparison group were asked about suicide attempts and suicidal ideation 5 and 9 years after intake to the study. Nine years after the abuse, a national death search was carried out to ascertain the number and causes of death in the 2 groups. Logistic regression was used to assess information on demographic and family functioning variables, the sexual abuse, notifications for other child abuse, criminal convictions, and out-of-home placements that were related to the outcome variables.

RESULTS:

Young people who had experienced child sexual abuse had a suicide rate that was 10.7 to 13.0 times the national Australian rates. There were no suicides in the control group. Thirty-two percent of the abused children had attempted suicide, and 43% had thought about suicide since they were sexually abused.

CONCLUSIONS:

Little information seems to be available to clinicians at the time of investigations for child sexual abuse in children that may identify those who are at increased risk of suicide. Abuse by an acquaintance, parental denial, or being angry with the child and not the abuser may predispose to suicide attempts but not necessarily to a completed suicide.

MY COMMENT: We all offer our heartfelt condolances to those families who have suffered the suicide of a youngster following sexual abuse. There is no greater nightmare than this, no greater source of anger. Those who are guilty of such crimes as sexual abuse must pay for their crimes. In this post I would like to instigate an investigation that may take many years to complete, an investigation which will have to be driven by families who have suffered the suicide of a youngster following upon sexual abuse. So, let me address this comment to them directly:

The “recovered memories of abuse” phenomenon is almost entirely limited to sex abuse litigation against Catholic priests, is it not? Just stepping back from that for a moment and seeing the broader picture of suicide of youngsters after being sexually abused, that seems to be a bit strange, doesn’t it? And seeing that we’re now past two billion dollars, and going on three billion in regard to settlements made in the U.S.A. alone, there does seem to be a bit of a temptation for money grabbing, for criminal racketeering among at least a few of those involved, right? Follow me on this. I’m on your side.

As has been noted in the books of David F. Pierre, Jr., there are now claims by some investigators who have been involved in all this from the start that false allegations are as high as 30% in some places, and, in Los Angeles, as high as even 50%. He also notes that giants in the field of memory among the pyschology/psychiatry crowd, say that “recovered memory” for traumatic experiences is a bad joke, for the problem in traumatic experiences (and sexual abuse is always traumatic) is not to remember, but to get such memories even for a few seconds out of one’s mind.

Let’s just say that even one of the many cases of sexual abuse followed by suicide involved a youngster who was not sexually abused, but who was guided in therapy undergone for whatever reason to “remember” sexual abuse. My questions are these:

(1) A youngster who thinks he or she has been sexually abused (regardless of the actual truth of the matter) is put at risk of committing suicide, and the numbers for that are quite high, as the study cited above indicates, is this not so? If a youngster commits suicide following upon the “therapy” of some unscrupulous “therapist”, and that youngster was never abused in the first place, but thinks he or she was, would this not to amount to malpractice, or worse?

(2) A youngster who figures out that he or she has been manipulated for whatever ulterior motives the psychologist/psychiatrist had in guiding the youngster to have false “recovered memories of abuse”, and that youngster sees the hell he or she has put the accused person through, will they again not be at risk for suicide, especially if the falsely accused “perpetrator” has been killed because of the false accusations?

(3) A youngster who has, from the get-go, purposely been riding the tide of money the “recovered memory of abuse” brings ashore, not also at risk of committing suicide for these same reasons once their consciences start to work on them, if they have not already lost their minds to drugs or whatever other escape? Making false accusations which basically kill the falsely accused person’s existence in this life will keep working on the one bearing false witness. It will catch up with them. I contend that such youngsters would never have been put at risk for committing suicide for this reason if it had not been for the cultural phenomenon of falsely “recovered memories” in which they were immersed. This also is a great sadness.

This is not a game. You know that. You’ve seen the blood. You should be mad as hell if your son or daughter, brother or sister, or anybody, has taken his or her own life because of falsely “recovered memories,” even while some unscrupulous psychologists/psychologists, lawyers and abuse groups are rolling in blood money at the price of his or her life.

Am I saying that all “recovered memories” are false or have been planted by unscrupulous people? No. What I am saying is that it should be investigated. You owe it to your son or daughter who has commited suicide. This will be an uphill battle. You will meet obstacles. Even though your son or daughter has lost his or her life, you will be mocked. Step one: Get the studies debunking “recovered memories” noted by David F. Pierre, Jr., and read through them. After that, you’ll know what the next step is.

The abortion priest and the post-abortive woman… A rant on the Light of Life!

Sigh. Unless it was a forced and false confession wrought in the midst of the ever so popular Reid style of interrogation popular among detectives (and that is a possibility, by the way, although I don’t know this, of course), this priest does seem to have admitted all to the police, that he was making babies with a young woman in the rectory, on her 18th birthday, and that, when one was made, he brought her to an abortuary, stayed with her, and paid for the abortion. He’s now in “treatment.” The D.A.’s doing an investigation to see if this started when the young lady was a minor, to see if there are corruption of a minor charges to be imposed. Of course, it’s all over for him as a priest if this turns out to be true. If I were to be charged with such a thing, and I were innocent, I would never agree to go to such “treatment”, though many priests, innocent of whatever charges, have done so as a way, they thought, to prove their innocence. Of course, one can never prove innocence, can one? And one is innocent until proven guilty, right? And even then, we’ve seen other cases, very many in fact, where the priest is wrongfully convicted and then kicked in the face by ecclesiastical superiors just so that they can have a good image for themselves in the media for having distanced themselves from the supposed offender, right? O.K., so, apart from the case itself, about which we know so little, let’s do an examination of conscience about our reaction to these events, supposing the allegations to be true just for the sake of argument…

What are your first thoughts as you read that article and watch that short video on that news website?

While you’re thinking about that, let me help you reflect with another video, the absolutely wonderful pictures for which were supplied by a still-traumatized-years-later post-abortive though now very prolife woman…

So, wow… to repeat the question: What are your first thoughts, having read that article and watched that short video on that news website?

Did your first thoughts go to the priest who went against absoultely everything that the priesthood is about?

Or, did your first thoughts go to the young woman, who is surely horrifically traumatized as all women are by abortion? I mean, to whom does she turn in order to get to know the goodness and kindness of Jesus… another priest? Maybe she has already, I don’t know. But. What. A. Trauma.

Or, were both these thoughts simultaneous?

Or perhaps it is all just too much, so that one is stunned, with no possibility for thoughts about it at all?

For myself, I don’t know what to say, perhaps… all of the above

What we do know is this, that no matter how great the sin, and sins can be horrific, Jesus can still forgive us, and does — That’s why He came! – but we need, with His grace, which He freely gives, to accept this forgiveness in our lives. Confession and then Communion with Him… That’s the way to go. Always.

I suppose there are many cases we will never know the truth about in this world. Many who are innocent are convicted. Many who as guilty as Satan himself walk free, in this world anyway.

I remember some ten years ago talking to an old priest-friend who was teaching over in the last remaining diocesan seminary on the Irish mainland, commenting that there are so few vocations in Ireland, and that so many are leaving the priesthood. He immediately quipped, as the Irish are bound to do, that many who left should have stayed, and many who did not leave should have left. Yikes!

Look, dear readers, we are all in this together. We have all of us, without exception, crucified Jesus by our sins. And He wants us in heaven. Sure, we can do terrible, terrible things, but His mercy is always stronger than our sin. Otherwise, we make of ourselves little gods in place of Him, right? Strange how false humility about the greatness of our sins can be so full of pride! We really need to let go of our darkness and, in that darkness, note how the light of Jesus is shining upon us, drawing us out of darkness into His marvelous light. We look to the light in the darkness until we are bathed in light, not that we are so much looking to Him, but recognizing that He is drawing us to Himself. That’s what we all need. The goodness and kindness of the Light of Life. And Jesus is just that good. He is just that kind. And He is drawing us to Himself. It’s all very dark, but His light is, how to say it… (sorry for the Star Trek reference…) His light is like a tractor beam drawing us irresistibly to Himself if we but say “Yes” despite all the darkness round about. Yes, Jesus… Yes…

The White House has a webpage dedicated to branches of government which visit, kind of like HAM radio operators notching up another contact. Those are political visits. Just to say, I think my list of visits must be about as ample as the presidents, though for different reasons!

Joining Father MacRae’s “Midnight Mass” — False accusations as a vote of confidence from Jesus

I’m humbled right into the dirt. Falsely accused, wrongly convicted Father Gordon MacRae has offered Holy Mass on the little concrete stump in his prison cell for yours truly, again… From an email relayed to me yesterday:

Dear Fr. George,

May grace and peace be with you. Mass in my cell tonight will be offered for you and [...]. I had the privilege this weekend of reading a printed copy of your recent post on forgiveness. It was wonderful, and I am a better priest for having read it. I thought you might like to see my own “Forgiving Those Who Trespass Against Us” written in agony one year ago this month on These Stone Walls.

I sent a note back to Father, mentioning that I would be offering Holy Mass at 11:00 PM last night (really 11:20 PM). This is when Father Gordon offers his Sunday Mass. Now, just to say something outrageous, just because I can!

To be falsely accused and wrongly convicted and thrown into prison is a vote of confidence from Jesus. Of course it is. This is to live the sum total of all the beatitudes. And when we come to grips with those beatitudes, must we not think that it is a curse to suffer for Jesus. We must know that there is beatitude in the beatitudes.

Some think that advancement in an ecclesiastical career is surely a sign of God’s favor, that God is on one’s side. [vomit here...] That attitude is a licence to practice abuse of office, which leads to… what kind of abuse? And that with a licence to rape, because… wait for it… because God is on one’s side! [vomit here again...]

God is not on our side. We are to be on His side, or better, IN His side, His Sacred Heart. That Heart was pierced through on the cross, where He hung because of what? Advancement in ecclesiastical office? Or was it because of false accusation? As the Master, so the disciple. It is the faithful disciple who has the privilege to serve the Prince of the Most Profound Peace in this way. Those with high ecclesiastical office may also suffer in this way, but not necessarily. It is a privilege to be a falsely accused priest with The Priest, Christ Jesus, Mary’s Son.

Just a word on that “written in agony” bit of Father MacRae’s email. He refers in the article he mentioned to being conflicted about the readiness to forgive and pray for those who helped to throw him in prison. Such thoughts were triggered by the news that one of the State Prosecutors for his case had just committed suicide (though probably nothing to do with his own case, he opines). Inflicting horrific injustice on another does have its toll, of course, even a deadly toll if the culprit doesn’t look to the Lord and try to reverse the damage he’s done. I just have to wonder if, with TheseStoneWalls gaining in popularity, someone didn’t note its existence to the said prosecutor. False accusers should take note of this. This is not a game. It is deadly serious. It catches up with one… You need money? Instead of false accusation, just get a job. Or better, in truly American style, create your own job!

Jesus is constantly working with the Father for us, providing or permitting a myriad circumstances in which we are not to perceive that we are being tested in any temptation, for instance, not to forgive, but in which circumstances, instead, we are to rejoice that the Holy Spirit is pointing out such weakness of ours as our cross by which, in remaining faithful (whatever our feelings or emotions say), and holding out a spirit, in this case, of forgiveness, our very lives become acts of intercession for the whole Church, the whole of the Mystical Body of Christ.

Father MacRae did say that he got over his conflicted feelings about what to do with his prosecutor. He did so with prayer and sacrifice offered for the repose of the soul of that prosecutor. That takes a great priest to do that, in the Lord’s grace.

The great thing with our Lord with all this forgiveness is that we can have the great consolation that in this world we remain weak, while the strength of Jesus shines out within us. If we do something like forgive those who persecute (prosecute) us unjustly, we know that we don’t have to claim that we did that, for we can point to Jesus’ grace. Also, in our weakness, we don’t have to think that we have to be free of conflicting feelings and emotions, which are just part of the cross we bear in this life because of original and any other sin. That weakness works for us, as it points us to the strength of Jesus. Father MacRae knows this first hand. That his feelings and emotions now back up his reasoned forgiveness in our Lord’s grace is reason to rejoice. This doesn’t mean that Father is without the benefit of a cross! We will always have something to spur us on to look to the goodness and kindness of Jesus. What it does mean is that, to the greater glory of God, Father is more at ease in taking in the worst this world has to offer. This has little to do with him, but everything to do with The Priest, who is the sovereign Lord of history and of our own souls.

But all that was last year. A year later Father writes this:

“The struggle I am in is not my own. It is rather a small, small part in the immense fabric of grace woven by God.”

Thanks, Father. Such a comment drags us right into the Heart of our Lord. How very much He loves us!

Freakishly anti-Semitic Google. Against Google, we’re all Jews.

I always like to “pick” flowers (pictures) in honor of a great Jewess, the Mother of Jesus.

I sometimes like to look up words as I use them. I googled “Jewess” and came up with the top entry definition supplied by Google itself:

Noun: offensive. A Jewish woman or girl.

I didn’t realize that being a Jew or a Jewess was “offensive”. Offensive to whom? I am offended that Google would promote such an offensive description of someone in the line of Judah, fourth son of Jacob, son of Isaac, son of Abraham.

The Jews are right to say that being Jewish is not a crime, and that to be proud of being Jewish is a good thing, and Pius XII himself said this, by the way.

Google’s anti-Semitic idiocy, saying someone’s very heritage in whatever way is offensive, is quite common.

When I was in Louisiana, the Cajans were condemned as being “Cajan”. But then a Cajan (from Accadia) wrote a book on being proud to be a Cajan, what with all of their epic history as Accadians.

When I was in Australia, I was told never to call an aborignine an Aborigine, for to be called an Aborigene is a great insult. I was incredulous. The Aborigines have been in Australia a good 40,000 years before any immigrants landed in the Down Under. And then an Aborigine wrote a book saying that he is proud to be called an Aborigine and… and… even… gasp!… an Abo. Very cool that!

Today, Catholics have been put into dhimmitude (made second class citizens) by Barak Hussain Obama, who promotes the Qur’an and trashes the Judeo-Christian Scriptures. Unless the courts do something, Catholic hospitals and schools and charitable institutions will cease to exist, just the thing that was happening to the Jews in Germany previous to the holocaust. I, for one, hope that I will always be proud to be a Catholic, however much I suffer or die for this. “Catholic” is also held to be pejorative these days. Whatever. I will continue to be Catholic and be proud of it.

Why all this on the Feast of Saint Joseph, Husband of Mary? Well, because Saint Joseph took care of little Jesus, both when He was in the womb of Mary by way of the overshadowing of the Holy Spirit, and upon His birth, and upon their exile into Egypt, and so on. These days, we especially need the protection of Saint Joseph when so many little ones are being destroyed by abortion pushed by money hungry abortionists, the new Herods of the day. We have now moved into infanticide. We’re quickly moving toward the regulation of the number of children, just like China, where women are killed who have more than one baby.

Saint Joseph, husband of Mary, protect us!

Oh… and a word to Google: I would change your description of what “Jewess” means. Really, I would, if I were you. Your policy is not to be evil. Well, you’re being evil now.

François-Xavier Nguyễn Văn Thuận and the cross of twelve minus one

Virginia reminded me of François-Xavier Cardinal Nguyễn Văn Thuận. I was given a picture of the pectoral cross he is kissing by a young vietnamese deacon to whom I was giving a canonical retreat for his ordination. This young fellow told me about the gems in this cross, eleven of them, one short of twelve. He told me that the Cardinal had mentioned the significance of the twelve minus one, viz., not just that Judas had betrayed Jesus, but that his own priests in Vietnam had betrayed him, sending him to cruel torture and imprisonment in the communist prisons of that time, which were truly horrific. What a gentle soul! And so very Catholic.

A fuller version of this picture used to grace the cover of my breviary. In the mayhem of building the hermitage, it’s disappeared, but I think I still have it.

I was particularly impressed by the Cardinal since yet another Cardinal condemned him as being worthless (yes, you read that right) because of the fact that he had been imprisoned for so many years. He said this privately to me, but I’ve been complaining about it ever since. That condemnation only proves the point of the twelve minus one gems on the pectoral cross. One is reminded to pray also for the Judas-priests, that they may return, if at all possible. Yikes!

Mother Angelica & Raymond Arroyo…. BUAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH HA HA HA HAAAAA… I love it

pages 241-244… … … … I can’t hold it back … … … I can’t… … … I … …  I … … … BUAAAAAAAH HA HA HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA (cough cough splutter splutter) AHHH HA HA HA HA HAAAAAA ! ! !

Thanks to S.S. for sending in this volume with the comment that there are many parallels with the life of Mother Angelica and myself. Well. Here and there. But that’s true for all of us with all of us, right!? I eat, sleep, and sometimes pray. She did that too. But more than that…

I hadn’t read this book because of being in various exploits round about the world. Some things just take me a long time to do. Just one of those things. Until now. Wow.

I just have to express my gratitude to Mother Angelica for the candid interviews she granted to Raymond Arroyo.

And Raymond, I mean, I always had a lot of respect for you, but the way you penned this account, my estimation of you has gone much higher than ever. Total respect. Very brave. Very, very cool.

A bit of perspective for readers who know how to look up 241-244: Don’t forget even for one second that there are those in the Church in America who will give blanket praise for Mother Angelica’s legacy, not only the 80% that is acceptable to more or less anyone, but even that 20% that grates on the nerves of some of our bishops and cardinals. They do this because they seek to bathe in her limelight. Those same people, when they take note of the same kind of brave witness that others others also provide to the Church, although conceding that 80% of that person’s life is good, nevertheless complain that there is 20% which is intollerable, for it rocks the status quo of the lowest common denominator of nothing with which they are accustomed. No limelight, no tolerance to proclaim the teachings of the Church, of the Son of God, in all charity. These sycophants never speak of the faith in a way that will challenge anyone, ever. Beware! I’ve seen them. Met them. Know them. Have been kicked in the face by them. Time and again. All around the world. Yikes!

Being in solidarity with those who suffer for Jesus’ sake

“Damn you! Stop suffering! I can’t take it anymore! Come down from that cross! Then I’ll be with you, in solidarity of a rejection of the cross!”

Such is NOT the way to be in solidarity with those who suffer for Jesus’ sake. Those who are mocked and rejected and marginalized don’t need to hear that they should just spit in the face of Jesus and get it over with. “Just go ahead and curse God, and then just go ahead and die!” said Job’s lovely wife to Job. But, hearing such things is also part of the cross of those who suffer for Jesus’ sake.

The words “Come down from that cross!” remind us of what happened on Calvary. It happens all the time today as well. This is the world’s way of being in solidarity with those who suffer. It is the mentality of euthanasia, of the culture of death. In order to stop people from dying, people kill those who suffer, even though those who suffer want to learn the redemptive value of suffering. But the onlookers can’t take looking at suffering, not because they are concerned about those who suffer, but because they can’t come to grips with their own mortality, and that they may suffer as well at some later date.

But sometimes people also miss out on being in solidarity with those who suffer for Jesus’ sake by misdirected wailing and lamentation. Behold, Jesus’ own words about this (RSV Luke 23,27-31):

And there followed him a great multitude of the people, and of women who bewailed and lamented him. But Jesus turning to them said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. For behold, the days are coming when they will say, `Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never gave suck!’ Then they will begin to say to the mountains, `Fall on us’; and to the hills, `Cover us.’ For if they do this when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?”

Yes, that’s right, against all the ever so balanced pundits of Catholic history, Jesus is saying that it will all get worse as time goes on. Anyway, take a close look at this. When one is doing the right thing and one is punished for it, the last thing one wants is for people to wail and lament all this. Those who are suffering for Jesus’ sake don’t want such attention for themselves. Their objective is to serve Jesus, and that is not something to wail and lament: “Oh, isn’t that just too bad. Oh, you’re suffering so much! Oh, isn’t that just so bad! Soooooo baaaaaaaaaaaaaaad!” Well, no. It’s not just so bad.

So, what does one talk about with those who suffer? Well, how about Jesus, about how good and kind He is? How about talking about the joys of being a soldier in this Church Militant of ours? How about speaking of the joys of being with Jesus no matter what? That’s what brings joy to those who suffer for Jesus’ sake.

But let’s go a step further and ask about the sorrow of Mary under the cross. She was in perfect solidarity with her Son, Jesus, with her own heart being pierced with a sword of sorrow (see Luke 2,34). Mary shared Jesus’ objective, our salvation. She didn’t want Him to come down from the cross. She was there with Him in solidarity. The sorrow was not a complaint about Jesus’ suffering, but about the rejection of His love by mankind, from the first man to the last. It was not a narcissistic sorrow, but an evangelical sorrow, permitting her to intercede for us just as perfectly as she saw our need. She only needed to see her Son on the cross to see our need. And she did see Him on the Cross, and then held Him…

The purpose of Holy Souls Hermitage

Since the hermitage is dedicated to priests and bishops in the purgatory of this life and the next, the blog should be as well, no? Yes.

One of the purposes of the hermitage is to write… to write very much, especially about Genesis 2,4–3,24. That will, in itself, I think, do much for the priests and bishops going through the purgatory of this life.

However, as you might have been noticing, I’ve been concentrating much on the purgatory of those priests who are suffering injustice, with their very lives becoming acts of intercession for their fellow priests and bishops. I think you’ll be seeing more of that. I love going to the heart of the priesthood by way of the glory of the suffering of those who are most rejected, most despised, most ridiculed, most mocked…

A confession: Given that this is the purpose of the hermitage, I thought you who have been my benefactors wouldn’t mind if I shared some of your generosity with me with those who are suffering. I’ve made some rather healthy donations to Opus Bono Sacerdotii for Father Gordon MacRae and others.

Why would any priest go to purgatory?

Aim at heaven, not purgatory, and you might not see hell from the inside in the life to come! Aiming at heaven is looking to our Lord and following Him, keeping His commandments, all by way of His grace. Living His grace takes utter childlike simplicity. It can be done. It is the work of the Lord.

Trouble is, we can think it is our work, that we have to work our way into heaven under our own power. That’s exactly the way not to go straight to heaven when we die. Trying to work our way to heaven is, in fact, the easiest way to go to hell. And this is the biggest reason why any priest might find himself in purgatory after this life. To put it a different way: priests will find themselves in purgatory in the next life for not having been totally generous in faithfully living through the purgatory of this life. But let me be more specific:

A priest is called upon by our Lord to be crucified by his fellow priests, that is, by this or that Judas-priest. The faithful priest is called upon not only not to cave in to the pressure to reject the doctrine and morality and praxis of Holy Mother Church, but also not to cave into bitterness against this or that Judas-priest who is having him crucified. Any giving in to battling flesh and blood instead of the fallen spirits is a failure that prohibits one from seeing just how good and kind Jesus is in having come into this world of Judas-priests. Instead of seeing Jesus’ goodness and kindness, only one’s own bitterness is visible. Not good. This must be purged before such a priest can go to heaven, for there is no other way to be able to have the joy of thanking our Lord in heaven than to see first of all how good and kind our Lord is in not being bitter with all of us, with each of us, with you and with me.

Is it possible to do this, to see the Lord’s goodness and kindness instead of our own bitterness for the crucifixion we can be put through by this or that Judas-priest? No, it is not possible for us of ourselves, but it is possible with the grace of our Lord. We are weak. He is strong. We boast of our weakness to that we might see Jesus’ strength shining through us, recognizing that His grace is sufficient for us, that His grace draws us through the purgatory of this life so that we might skip the purgatory of the next life and immediately be on our way to heaven so as to thank the Lord for His goodness and kindness.

The Sacred Penitentiary on sodomy between husband and wife: “NOT ON YOUR LIFE!”

 There are some who, because of the push for homosexual “marriage”, or because yet others push for an egregious, blasphemous, pornographic misrepresentation of John Paul II’s Theology of the Body, insist that sodomy between husband and wife is just fine.

Some think that it is confusing to people to contradict the Obama administration’s “magisterium” or that of anti-Catholic “theologians”. Therefore, these increasingly few bigots call the teaching of the Church a scholarly opinion, however precious, but insist that one is not to rock the boat. They say that one must remain silent before error, for error, they say, has rights, that the status quo has rights, for it is established, accepted, and is therefore the way to go. Excuse me, but error has no rights, and the teaching of the Church is not an opinion. Is it better to remain silent always and in every case in the public square, shackling ourselves to an anti-evangelical silence to the end that sin may prevail and the world might go on its merry way to hell? Really? I think it’s better to be crucified and maligned than to bow before the god of error.

I remember publically being attacked by a famous canon lawyer, who insisted that his famous car-pool buddy was correct in evangelizing sodomy in marriage because, he said, he had found a pre-Vatican II author who wrote in Latin and pushed for sodomy in marriage, and therefore had to be correct. But I mean, what does that mean, that all the heresies of the early centuries written in Latin before Vatican II were not heresies because they were written in Latin before Vatican II? Honestly! Give me a break.

What’s worse than this is that I was criticized for being criticized by this famous canon lawyer, as if being crucified for the sake of Jesus is now a crime in the Church. Before citing the decision of the Holy See on this matter, let me call to the fore a previous post on the supposed illegitimacy of doing, saying and being nothing:

“Criticism is something we can avoid easily by saying nothing, doing nothing, and being nothing (Aristotle d. 322 B.C.).

The status quo of nothing has become the god of politically correct ecclesiastics, who desire nothing more than to say nothing other than what is said by others, who desire nothing more than to do nothing other than what is done by others, and who desire nothing more than be nothing other than what others are. And the only others in their view that are worth taking note of are those who say nothing, do nothing and are nothing. The status quo of being dead: nice!

So, let’s edit the famous more modern version of all this, oft disputed as to its true modern origin. You saw this version here first! –

All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to say nothing, do nothing, be nothing.

But Father, but Father, that guy was really, really offended by what you said! He said that you’re challenging him to live up to his declared faith, to his declared patriotism, to his declared loyalty to God and man. How dare you! Oh, Father, how can you be so arrogant, so obstinate? Do you think that you’re another messiah? Do you think that you’re the savior of the world? Huh? Huh?

Sigh. No. Jesus is all. But we are His disciples, no? And, like the Master, so the disciple. Let’s just say it again:

All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to say nothing, do nothing, be nothing.

But Father, but Father, don’t you know that that’s suicide to say such things. They’ll curse you, slander you, try in every way to discredit you, make you look like a criminal, despise you, spit on you, crucify you. Judas is alive. Everywhere to be found. What can’t you just be nice? Don’t you get it? Just cave in. Get along. We’ve all given in. Come along with us, for friendship! Otherwise, you elect yourself a martyr…

Sigh. No. Faithfulness is synonymous with giving witness. Jesus is the one who has laid down our lives with His own. What a privilege! And the reason we give witness is not because we hate others, or think we are better than they are, but because Jesus has shown such great mercy to all of us, and loves us, and wants that we all see the fullness of the truth, of love, of goodness and kindness. I have none of those things, but Jesus does. I point to Him, as should we all. Pointing to Him means saying something, doing something, but most of all, more than all other things put together, it means being something, that is, someone, who has received His mercy, His goodness, His kindness. Of ourselves we are nothing, do nothing, say nothing, but with Him, we can witness to Him, who is All in all.

Will it cost us? Yes. Terribly. Nothing in comparison to what our Lord went through for us. He is just so good, just so kind.
